Offer a course to a lecturer

Create a course offering for an academic period and assign a lecturer so the course appears on their dashboard.

Before you begin

  • You need an owner, administrator, or academic coordinator role that can manage course offerings and teaching assignments.
  • The lecturer must already be a member of the institution (invited and accepted).
  • Lecturers only see a course on their dashboard after they are assigned to an active course offering. Creating a cohort alone does not give a lecturer a course to teach.

How it fits together

  • A course definition is the reusable identity of a course (code, title, credit).
  • A course offering is one delivery of that definition for a specific academic period, programme, and cohort.
  • A teaching assignment links a staff member to an offering with a role such as Lead lecturer.

Steps

  1. Confirm the course definition exists. Open Academic → Course definitions and create it if needed, then activate it.
  2. Open Academic → Course offerings and choose New course offering.
  3. Complete the three steps: course identity (definition, code, slug), academic context (period, programme, cohort, campus), then schedule and capacity.
  4. Save the draft, open the offering, and activate it so it can accept a teaching team and students.
  5. From the offering, open People → Teaching team (or Academic → Teaching assignments).
  6. Choose Add assignment, select the staff member, set the role to Lead lecturer, and set the effective dates.
  7. Activate the assignment.

The lecturer now sees the offering on their dashboard and under My teaching the next time they open their workspace.

Alternative: let the lecturer create the offering

  1. Open the course definition and, under Lecturer offering-create grants, grant the lecturer permission.
  2. Ask the lecturer to open My Teaching → New course offering and create the scheduled offering.
  3. They become Lead lecturer automatically. You still open and activate the offering when learners should enrol.

Example: give Digital Forensics to Dr. Jefferson

  1. Create (or open) the Digital Forensics course offering for the current academic period and activate it.
  2. Open People → Teaching team on that offering.
  3. Add a teaching assignment for Dr. Jefferson as Lead lecturer, set the effective dates, and activate it.
  4. Ask Dr. Jefferson to refresh their dashboard; the Digital Forensics offering now appears there.

If the lecturer still sees nothing

  • Check that the offering is active (not still a draft).
  • Check that the teaching assignment is active and its effective dates include today.
  • Confirm the lecturer accepted their institution invitation and is signing in to the correct institution.
