Launch laboratory sessions

Prepare and launch offering-scoped laboratory sessions from Course Offering Labs without discipline-specific lab content.

Last reviewed: 28 August 2026

Before you begin

  • Your institution must enable Practical Learning for this Course Offering.
  • Teaching staff need an active Teaching Assignment (or offering administration rights).
  • Students need an active Academic Enrolment on the Course Offering.
  • Lab Activity Instances must use Activity Definition type Lab and be published.

For teaching staff

  1. Open Institution Workspace and go to the Course Offering.
  2. Open the Labs section.
  3. Confirm lab Activity Instances are listed.
  4. After a student prepares or launches a session, use End, Mark failed, Cancel, or Expire as needed.
  5. Review failure messages when a provider launch fails closed.

For students

  1. Open Institution Workspace and go to your Course Offering.
  2. Open the Labs section.
  3. Choose a published lab Activity Instance and select Launch lab.
  4. If launch succeeds, your Lab Session moves to Active (or you are redirected to the provider target).
  5. If no laboratory provider is configured, launch fails closed with a clear error — contact your teaching staff.

What this does not include

Discipline-specific laboratory content (for example Digital Forensics or Nursing cases) is not part of this generic Labs workspace. Those environments belong to later subject-specific work.
