Create and manage assessments

Before you begin

Assessments live on the Course Offering under Assessments. Your institution must enable Practical Learning and Assessments. You need teaching or management authority on the offering.

Assessments use four Ghana labels: Quiz, Test, Exam, and Assignment. Practice projects stay under Activities / Practice, not this builder.

Create an assessment

1. Open Institution Workspace and go to the Course Offering.
2. Open Assessments.
3. Choose Add assessment.
4. Pick the kind of assessment — this shapes the whole form so you only see what you need:
   • Written questions — multiple-choice and short-answer only (quizzes, tests, research methods, theory).
   • Case & evidence analysis — questions plus an evidence pack of exhibits or images (digital forensics, case studies).
   • File or project submission — students upload their work (assignments, essays, projects).
5. Choose the grade label (Quiz, Test, Exam, or Assignment). This sets sensible timing and attempts.
6. Enter a title and instructions, then set total marks, open and close times, and whether the work is take-home.
7. Choose Create assessment.

Add images to instructions

You can add pictures — diagrams, screenshots, or exhibits — directly inside the instructions or an evidence description.

1. In the Instructions editor, choose Image.
2. Pick a JPG, PNG, GIF, or WebP file. It uploads and appears in the text automatically.
3. The image is stored securely and only shown to staff and students on this offering.

Add questions (Quiz, Test, Exam)

1. Open the assessment.
2. Under Questions, choose Multiple choice or Short answer.
3. Enter the question text and marks.
4. For multiple choice, fill at least two options and mark the correct answer.
5. Choose Add question. Question marks should add up to the assessment total marks.

Assignment-style assessments use Submission mode. Students submit file or text evidence from Learning Experience My work after starting the assessment.

Add an evidence pack (only when you need one)

Some subjects — such as digital forensics or case analysis — give students exhibits, logs, or artefacts to examine. Others, like research methods, only need questions. The evidence pack is therefore off by default so the builder stays uncluttered.

1. Choosing the Case & evidence analysis format turns the pack on for you. You can also turn on Include an evidence pack manually while creating the assessment, or later from Edit settings.
2. The Evidence pack section then appears on the assessment page, where you can add exhibits.
3. Each exhibit can carry an attachment — an image (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP) previews inline for students, while PDFs and text files appear as a download.
4. Adding an evidence item automatically switches the pack on, so the section is never hidden while it holds content.
5. Turn the toggle off to hide the evidence pack from students without deleting the items.

Remind students when it opens or closes

Under Learner reminders you can turn on two optional in-app reminders. Both are off by default and reach students inside the platform Notifications list — they do not send extra email.

1. Notify learners when it opens sends a one-time reminder when the assessment becomes available.
2. Notify learners when it is closing soon sends a one-time reminder shortly before the close time. Set a Closes time for it to apply.

You can turn these on while creating an assessment, or later from Edit settings on the assessment. If you reschedule the open or close time, the matching reminder is armed again so students hear about the new time.

Publish and mark

1. When ready, choose Publish for students. Students see the assessment in Learning Experience Assessments when the open window allows.
2. Before publishing — or any time after — choose Preview as student on a written-questions assessment to open the sit screen as learners see it. Answers cannot be saved or submitted in preview.
3. Open the assessment to review Student attempts.
4. Multiple-choice answers are auto-scored. Enter marks for short answers, then save.
5. Tick Release score to student now when feedback release is manual, or rely on the assessment’s after-submit / after-close setting.
