Bulk import students into a course offering

Upload a CSV to create Academic Enrolments, optionally provisioning Student memberships.

Last reviewed: 28 August 2026

Before you begin

  • Academic imports must be enabled for your institution by AppliedMode or your institution owner.
  • You need institution owner or administrator rights for imports.
  • Prepare a CSV using the Bulk Students template from Academic imports.

Bulk import creates or requests Academic Enrolment. Optional membership creation still uses Institution Membership (Student role). It does not create teaching assignments or purchases.

Steps

  1. Open Academic → Imports (or your institution’s Academic imports page).
  2. Choose Bulk Students.
  3. Download the template if needed. Required columns: offering_code, email, status.
  4. For new students not yet on AppliedMode, include first_name and last_name.
  5. Upload the CSV and review the preview (valid, invalid, skip counts).
  6. Confirm only when the preview looks correct.
  7. After processing, download the results file.
  8. If you need to undo a completed bulk student import, open the import and choose Roll back bulk import. This withdraws enrolments and memberships created by that import. It does not delete user accounts.

Tips

  • Duplicate operational enrolments are skipped safely.
  • Prefer pending status when approval workflows apply; use active when the offering accepts immediate enrolment.
  • Keep files UTF-8 CSV and under your institution’s size and row limits.
