Teaching & delivery

Add a teaching assistant to your course

Invite a teaching assistant for a course offering and choose which delivery tasks they can help with.

Last reviewed: 28 August 2026

Before you begin

  • You must be the lead lecturer or a lecturer assigned to the course offering.
  • Teaching assistants belong to the course (not as a separate institution role). They are invited as staff and assigned on this offering.
  • Institution administrators can still manage the full teaching team.

What teaching assistants can do by default

When you add a teaching assistant, they can open the course, see the roster, and view progress. Extra access is off until you turn it on.

Add someone already on the staff list

  1. Open the course offering workspace.
  2. Go to People → Teaching team.
  3. Choose Add teaching assistant.
  4. Select the staff member.
  5. Optionally limit them to a class group and set dates.
  6. Tick the access you want them to have, then save.

Invite by email

  1. On the same Add teaching assistant page, use Invite by email.
  2. Enter their email and choose access to enable.
  3. Send the invitation.
  4. The person appears on People → Teaching team as Pending until they accept.
  5. When they accept, they join the institution as a lecturer and this course as your teaching assistant with the access you chose.

You can Resend email or Revoke a pending invitation from the teaching team table.

Change access later

  1. Open People → Teaching team.
  2. Open the teaching assistant’s assignment.
  3. Under Teaching assistant access, enable or disable:
    • Upload materials
    • Post announcements
    • Manage learning activities
    • Facilitate labs and simulations
    • Review and grade
  4. Choose Save access.

Revoke access

Open the assignment and choose Revoke, with a short reason. The person keeps their institution membership unless an administrator removes it separately.

What teaching assistants never get

Teaching assistants do not manage course settings, student enrolment policy, or the rest of the teaching team. Those stay with lecturers and institution administrators.
